Who I Am

I am Dr. Loretta Kroin, a clinical psychologist licensed as a Health Service Provider in Psychology. I am the owner and president of CHOICES: Psychology Consultation Center, Inc., a private practice of psychology in the Carmel & Indianapolis, Indiana area. I decided to become a psychologist when I was a senior in high school while taking a psychology class. One of the books I read at the suggestion of my teacher inspired me to become a psychologist to gain the skills needed to channel my desire to help others. (That was before I realized how many years of education it would take! 4 years of undergraduate college, 2 years for my master’s degree, and 5 more years to get my Ph.D. which included a year of specialized training in a formal clinical internship setting. I am really lucky that I was a good student and liked school!) This choice has been a good fit for my interests and personality as well. I enjoy using the process of psychotherapy to help others grow - to become confident, more effective, and to live more meaningful and fulfilled lives as they challenge and clarify their perceptions and beliefs to become the person they want to be.

Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to learn about yourself and to use this new understanding to make changes you have not been able to make in the past. When we understand ourselves more deeply and honestly, we can change how we relate to ourselves and others, how we handle distressing situations, and how we work toward meaningful accomplishments that are in line with our deepest values. Therapy can provide an opportunity to solve problems and heal wounds. It can be a place of hope and new beginnings. Within a trusting, collaborative professional relationship, I can provide structure for you to build strengths, support, and resources, and to discover and implement solutions.

I am flexible in providing space for an open exploration of issues and concerns when you are confused about what you need to do to make the changes you desire. I also am skilled at helping my clients create clear goals with realistic and achievable steps. My style is compassionate, client-centered, and interactive. I am direct and ask questions when I have them and acknowledge patterns when I observe them. My practice is informed by narrative, systemic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, solution-focused, psychodynamic, and depth psychology perspectives. I consider you to be the expert about your life and I think of myself as a consultant whose job it is to explore and clarify meanings and help you find answers consistent with your values and objectives. If you are looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or are just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

What I Do

Though I have broad training and experience in most areas of psychology, my special areas of interest and expertise include women’s issues, health concerns including coping with chronic illness, anxiety and depression, stress management, executive career consultation, helping small and medium-sized businesses respond to trauma or conflict within the workplace, and helping men and women, families, and couples resolve communication and relationship problems.

As a psychologist, I will help you use an objective process to evaluate and articulate your concerns. At times I will ask you to gather data on a specific behaviors, thoughts, or feelings to help us plan our approach to change. At other times, I will have you complete specific psychological assessments in order to look at your issues objectively. I will help you consider the strengths and weaknesses of your relationships and support system and help you set goals to resolve any problems we identify. I will work with you to examine your behaviors and beliefs to ensure that they are consistent with your expressed priorities and values. I can teach you ways to improve your coping and problem solving skills that will enhance your ability to deal with stress, conflict, and change. I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to your individual needs, in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, to help you attain the personal growth you desire.

I will encourage you to try a number of techniques and strategies developed from different psychological perspectives based on your goals to help you experiment with and practice new skills such as mindfulness techniques, self-monitoring, goal-setting, journaling, dream analysis, active imagination, and expressive creative projects. It is important to understand that you will get more results from therapy if you actively participate in the process at home as well as in the office. The ultimate goal of therapy is to help you implement new strategies in your life to create the change you want. Therapy can be a place to grow into the person you really want to become.
